MAC 301 International Communication
The course explores communication practice across international borders with an emphasis on the structures of the international media as well as their roles in molding and formation of public opinion across geographical boundaries and the influence on attitudes and the policy-making environment. The scope of international communication is concerned with “government-to-government”, “business-to-business”, and “people-to-people” interactions at a global level. The course encompasses political, economic, social, cultural and military concerns relating to the global flow of information. Merits of the ‘new world information order’ debate, as well as the media imperialism thesis, will also be examined in the course.
MAC 302 Communication and Society
This course examines the media of mass communication as a social institution with particular attention to pertinent sociological concepts, themes and problems. The role and relationship of the mass media vis-a-vis major social institutions are also explored. The emphasis in the course is focused on the sociology and professionalism of mass media communicators, mass media contents and the issue of cultural imperialism of mass media dependency; internal dynamics and control of mass media organisations and mass communication politics. The role of communication in development is also critically examined.
MAC 303 Issues in Nigerian Mass Media History
The course is an exploration of topical issues in the history of Nigerian mass media, putting in proper context the history of the evolutionary processes, the progression, the dynamics and the challenges that the Nigerian mass media had to contend with from inception to date. Selected topical issues aptly situated within the political, socio-economic, cultural and developmental ambiance of Nigeria with the media playing the role of a catalyst, a mirror and yet unrelenting critics are examined in this course.
MAC 304 Newspaper Management & Production
Students will be acquainted with the business theories, management techniques and the organizational principle of the print media. Emphasis will be on both the newsgathering and editing procedures as well as the technical processes involved in publishing a newspaper. The course demands that students publish the departmental newspaper “Unijos Echo” twice – in the first and second semesters respectively. The editorial team is student-oriented and would be overseen by the lecturer involved.
MAC 305 Science & Technology Reporting
The course will equip students with the skill required for handling special reports in areas such as health, energy, science and technology. They will be taught how to report same for both print and broadcast media.
MAC 306 Photo Editing
This course places emphasis on camera work for still and motion pictures, as well as the techniques of colour prints, colour separations and the editing of photographic materials for the media. Students will be exposed to the variety of software available for editing both still photos (for the print) and motion pictures (for broadcast).
MAC 307 Economics of Mass News Reporting
This course aims at preparing students to write up and analyze issues relating to the economy for a mass audience. The course takes students through the basic economic structure of society, discussing the social and political issues relating to the economy. The rationale is to enable students to acquire basic skills that will help them in putting into proper perspective economic issues while reporting on the economy. This is because much of what passes for economic news reporting in the Nigerian news media is written by economists for economists without putting the audience in context. A basic course in economics is desirable but not essential. Students offering this course should have successfully completed Advanced Reporting.
MAC 308 Screen Directing
This course is a prerequisite for techniques of television production, techniques of film production and television production workshop as well as all screen production and directing courses. Theories of directing, basic screen directing techniques, qualities and roles of the screen director as well as screen aesthetics and transition techniques are covered in the course. These are examined through lectures, demonstrations and applied exercises to establish theoretical and practical foundations.
MAC 309 Advanced Communication Research
This course is designed to equip students with research competency skills with emphasis on precision, clarity, flow, and defense of arguments through proper acknowledgment and citation of sources. The course, therefore, treats how to conduct field observations, focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, semi-structured interviews, case studies, framing analysis; surveys, content analysis, audience ratings and opinion polling, as well as the formulation of hypotheses. The development of instruments, methods of data collection, and measurement, modeling, and management of data as well as proposal and research report writing, how to review literature, citation styles and how to document cited sources are also covered by the course. The course is aimed at enabling students to write a credible academic dissertation and a professional project report.
MAC 310 Magazine Management & Production
The course studies the nature of management principles and roles and their application to the effective organization and management of magazines. Topics to be covered include; organizational structure and operation of the various departments and personnel involved in magazine production, mobilization and motivational strategies for enhanced productivity among print media personnel/staff and analysis of the sequential journey of news from the reporter to the news-stand. Students are expected to produce a magazine at the end of the course as part of their continuous assessment.
MAC 311 Broadcast Commentary & Critical Writing
Students will be introduced to the techniques for writing and producing commentaries and evaluations for broadcast on radio and television covering current topical issues in the society. Each student will write and produce at least one piece of work in this genre and the best ones will be retained for use on the Campus FM Radio Station, jointly operated by the Department.
MAC 312 Foreign Correspondence
Students will learn to write and exchange news and information beyond national borders and across different cultural perspectives. The technical aspect of sending/filing reports across national borders through telex, telephone, satellite communications, e-mail and the internet will also be examined. The course will also examine the political factors in play as regards international reportage while expounding on some of the challenges facing foreign correspondence.
MAC 315 Photojournalism
The course explores communication through the use of photography and images that tells a story or aptly conveys a message. Emphasis is on the collection, editing, and presentation of photographs and other graphic materials for news, advertising or any form of mass-mediated communication. By complying with a rigid ethical framework which demands that the work is both honest and impartial whilst telling the story in strictly journalistic terms, the course enables students to understand the basic techniques of photojournalism and the social, legal, privacy and ethical issues associated with photojournalism practice and how to guard against the issues by utilizing pictures that contribute to the news media. The aesthetic, as well as technical skills required for photojournalism practice, are also examined.
MAC 316 Advertising Techniques
Advertising techniques takes students through the strategies and techniques used in marketing communications to encourage or persuade an audience (viewers, readers or listeners; sometimes a specific group) to continue or take some new action relating to a product, good or service. How to drive consumer behaviour with respect to a commercial, political or ideological offering, using various media of mass communication is examined. The processes involved in identifying and creating a unique selling proposition for product, good or service and launching an advertising campaign that meets the marketing goals of the advertiser through various media of mass communication such as newspapers, magazines, television, radio, outdoor media, direct mail or new media such as blogs, websites or text messages are also covered by the course.
MAC 317 Media Attachment
Credit is earned for working experience with media institutions and organisations. Students will spend the whole second semester on a supervised Media Attachment in related media organisations and institutions to gain practical experience. Students who are already working full-time in a particular type of media outfit will be encouraged to serve their attachment elsewhere in order to gain additional experience.
MAC 320 Techniques of Television Production
This course is designed to teach the basic principles and techniques for the production of television programmes. Students are expected to gain practical experience while learning to produce programmes at the in-house Digital TV/Film Studios operated by the Department.
MAC 321 Techniques of Radio Production
This course is designed to teach the basic principles and techniques for the production of radio programmes. Students are expected to gain practical experience while learning to produce programmes for the Campus FM Radio Station, jointly operated by the Department.
MAC 325 Investigative & Interpretative Reporting
Students will be taught how to report investigative stories. The course will focus on the techniques of investigative reporting as well as the conventions of gathering and writing such material. As a follow up to news writing and reporting, students will understand what in-depth reporting is all about.
MAC 327 Non-Linear Editing
This course is designed to teach the basic principles and techniques of non-linear (non-destructive, non-sequential) audio and video editing. Students are expected to gain practical experience in these skills by observing and practicing modern non-linear techniques at the in-house Digital TV/Film Studios operated by the Department, as well as at the Campus FM Radio Station, jointly operated by the Department.
MAC 328 Television News Broadcast and Webcast Production
The objective of this course is to teach students the techniques and skills required for writing, reporting, editing and producing television broadcast and webcast news reports. Students will be taught the skills that will enable them to produce brilliant television and webcasts that deliver the full personal computer experience to iPads, tablets, Android and other smartphones via internet synchronization of video communications for corporate clients, agencies, brands and the public sector. How to produce corporate documentaries shot on-location, brand films, branded digital newsrooms and video content linked directly from television broadcasts to online webcasts will also be examined.
MAC 330 Magazine Editing & Production
Students will be acquainted with the business theories, management techniques and organizational principle of the print media. Emphasis will be on both the newsgathering and editing procedures as well as the technical processes involved in publishing a magazine. The distinctions between newspaper management and production, and magazine management and production will be established, bringing out the intricacies of each. The course demands that students publish the departmental magazine as a prerequisite for earning credits in the course. The editorial team is student-oriented and would be overseen by the lecturer involved.
